Time for another edition of our tips and trick where we present you with a few tidbits of information which we hope makes you everyday computing tasks just a little better.

Lost Downloads

Have you ever wondered where your downloads go? Maybe you've recently used Firefox instead of Internet Explorer and can't find the file you just downloaded...

Well, very often, you get to set the location where your downloaded files will go when you install your browser, so pay close attention to what it defaults to and what you change it to.

If you're struggling after having installed your new browser, you can find out where your files are being saved to and change it. For instance, to see your downloaded files in Firefox, click Tools > Downloads. To change the location, click Tools > Options. Select the Main tab and then simply browse to your new save location beside the "Save files to:" label.

If you're using a different browser, check its help file. A search for "download folder" should point you in the right direction.

Quick & Easy Envelopes
Even with the coming of email, you'll still need to send letters every now and again. Typing your email is more professional and certainly quicker for a lot of people now. It sure would be nice if you could whip up an envelope just as quick, eh?

Well, you can. Here's the quickest and easiest way we know of to create a professional envelope in Word.

  1. Enter your details. Go to Tools / Options and then select the User Information tab. Enter your full name and mailing address in there and then Word will use that info as a default return address when doing the next steps.
  2. Highlight the delivery address in your letter. (You did create a professional letter with Word's handy templates and entered a delivery address in the letter, right?)
  3. With the delivery address highlighted, select Tools / Envelopes and Labels. (In the more recent versions of Word, this will be found in Tools / Letters and Mailings / Envelopes and Labels.)

That's it! You'll see your user info as the return address and the highlighted address as the delivery address of the envelope. All you have to do is select the envelope size (in Options), put the envelope in your printer and click Print.

Bumpy Keyboard
You may not have noticed it before but if you look at the F and J keys on your computer's keyboard, you'll now notice a little bump on each one.

Before you overreact and call your keyboard manufacturer asking for a discount, this is done deliberately to help you touch type. All you need to do is feel around for the bumps, place your left index finger on the F key and your right index finger on the J key and then line up the rest of your fingers.

Don't worry - you'll get used to it! After a bit of practice you won't even need to look down at your keyboard.

That's it for this month. We hope you find these tips useful and if you did, please share them!
