PC Tips & Tricks #3
=================
Last month, we explained how to automate some important PC maintenance
tasks so you don't have to remember to do them yourself. This month, we're
shifting our focus to the internet to show you how to make your internet
searches more powerful.
We'd also like to announce that, for a limited time, we're dropping our
recovery fee from $14.95 to ONLY $9.95!
Now, on to powering your internet searches so the results are information
you're REALLY looking for...
- Always try to use more words (so long as they're descriptive) rather
than less. This simple step alone will bring back much more relevant
results.
- Surround your search terms with quotation marks when looking for
an exact name or phrase. (Check out the difference in the number of
pages found for the search term data recovery with quotes and
without!)
- If you want search results always include a certain word, put a plus
sign before the required word. (Be sure to include a space before the
"+" sign. i.e. "memory cards" +sd)
- If you want your searches to exclude certain words, simply add a
minus sign immediately followed by the word to be excluded. (i.e. "memory
cards" -sd)
- Search engines ignore common words such as "where", "the",
"how". If a common word is essential to getting the results
you want, you can force it to be included by putting a "+"
sign in front of it as shown above.
- If your looking for the definition of a word or phrase, use define:
followed by a space and your word(s) in Google. On Yahoo, use define
followed by a space and then your word(s). All words will be included
in your definitions which will be gathered from various online sources.
Both Google and Yahoo do loads more than just search for words. For instance:
- On Yahoo, for the latest airport conditions as well as maps, directions,
local weather, and airport terminal maps, where available, search on
the airport name or airport code and the term airport. i.e. ohare
airport.
- You can do basic math calculations by simply typing them in. You
can add (+), subtract (-), multiply (*) and divide (/).
- To include a number range in your search on Google, just enter the
numbers separated by two periods with no spaces. For instance to find
cameras that cost between $100 and $250, enter camera $100..$250.
